ACCESS10 EXHIBITION

ACCESS 10 is a show about a diverse group of individuals who are convening to do an Art Exhibition which will celebrate one year of art practice following their studies on an access course at UCA Canterbury from 2010-2011.

The majority of us have just completed our first year studying at degree level in Fine Art, although one or two of us have studied Photography and Textiles and others have continued their practice outside of the college environment.

This show has been an occasion for us to get together and revaluate our work as a cohort. It is rare to see a show of first year students' work because usually students wait until they exhibit in their final degree show, which gives them the status of BA graduates.  We wanted to continue the momentum of interacting together as a post access group.

This show at Limbo, Margate, illustrates the broad spectrum, and mode of artistic expression, already developed within the group. We are a strong collective of committed artists who aim to show together in the future, possibly in a smaller or larger group.

Bundles (from Borneo)

I’ve decided against the first proposal.  Way too linear and unrepresentative of me as a person.  My journey is much more convoluted and much of my working life is about bringing people together and sharing and in the spirit of that and me as an individual who seems to make things complicated for myself in order to attempt to make things easy for others (although that does often fail), I have sent off a piece of mail art.  There is a story attached to it, probably too many stories in fact, maybe for later.  But when I had a true moment, when my hands were shaking from something technical I had to do and needed to feel relaxed, I crafted to calm.  I tied together the pieces of fabric I picked up in a bagged up bundle in a tailors shop.  I did it quickly and I did it because I wanted to send something through the post and I wanted to send something to share with everyone.  The fabric shows the choices people have here on this island, quite literally, but I hope that people will take a piece of it during the exhibition and whatever is left will go into the fabric bin in the college in Canterbury which is one of the many places there where dreams are made.  As I was tying the pieces I noticed one part was tied together like a knot, I kept it that way and made that the middle.  I also noticed a clean pair of pants that had fallen into the pile, they have remained behind (I’ll need them anyway), as too have a few scraps of material which are smaller and too difficult to tie.  So that’s my piece, it can be stretched out on the floor, left in a pile in the corner, or dangled from the ceiling.   If it wraps around the corner somewhere on the ground like a harmless snake, then that would be pleasing for me.  I will email an edited piece of writing to go up near it, if that’s okay. From someone who tries hard to relate, adapt and to share, and currently tries to do as many things as possible in a day, a piece of work which I think is the most honest.

With this series of work I wanted to investigate how everyday objects could be transformed simply with the addition and subtraction of light. How mundane, inanimate objects could be brought to life with a single light source, to take on a new identity. I photographed the objects in a dark room, placing a single LED light in/on/next to the item, using a long exposure.

Cornucopia

Drawing in mixed media, 84 x 29.5 cm.

Stefani

Woven white dasies, ivy and corn.  64 x 41 cm.

My current work is about myth and metamorphosis aiming to create an impression of my personal mythology in a variety of media. The Stifani is part of Cretan folklore and is made by women in Maytime; they gather the white daisies from the hedgerows and make a garland, which they hang on the door of their home. It is supposed to bring them love. I spent some time in Crete in 2006 and made one of these; this year the same white daisies have spread across my lawn.

floral text: 110cm x 30cm (can be wall mounted or self standing on floor)

"STAIN" acrylic on plywood

I wanted to create an abstract piece that was led by the materials. For this purpose I chose a discarded piece of plywood from my neighbour's field brushed off most of the debris and then using a cloth in a polishing motion applied layers of acrylic paint enhancing the patterns or feel of the wood as I progressed.
The piece is approx 60cms by 120cms and would need to be hung on a wall. Some natural light would be an advantage.

Oil paint on boards.   28.5 x 24 cm and 11 x 21 cm.

From a 'dark and light' project.  The cup of light perched precariously on the edge of a vertical drop with the handle beckoning for a helping hand is my attempt to portray how vulnerable life can sometimes be. The small dark painting below is to emphasise gravity, in both senses of the word.
