ACCESS10 EXHIBITION

ACCESS 10 is a show about a diverse group of individuals who are convening to do an Art Exhibition which will celebrate one year of art practice following their studies on an access course at UCA Canterbury from 2010-2011.

The majority of us have just completed our first year studying at degree level in Fine Art, although one or two of us have studied Photography and Textiles and others have continued their practice outside of the college environment.

This show has been an occasion for us to get together and revaluate our work as a cohort. It is rare to see a show of first year students' work because usually students wait until they exhibit in their final degree show, which gives them the status of BA graduates.  We wanted to continue the momentum of interacting together as a post access group.

This show at Limbo, Margate, illustrates the broad spectrum, and mode of artistic expression, already developed within the group. We are a strong collective of committed artists who aim to show together in the future, possibly in a smaller or larger group.

Bundles (from Borneo)

I’ve decided against the first proposal.  Way too linear and unrepresentative of me as a person.  My journey is much more convoluted and much of my working life is about bringing people together and sharing and in the spirit of that and me as an individual who seems to make things complicated for myself in order to attempt to make things easy for others (although that does often fail), I have sent off a piece of mail art.  There is a story attached to it, probably too many stories in fact, maybe for later.  But when I had a true moment, when my hands were shaking from something technical I had to do and needed to feel relaxed, I crafted to calm.  I tied together the pieces of fabric I picked up in a bagged up bundle in a tailors shop.  I did it quickly and I did it because I wanted to send something through the post and I wanted to send something to share with everyone.  The fabric shows the choices people have here on this island, quite literally, but I hope that people will take a piece of it during the exhibition and whatever is left will go into the fabric bin in the college in Canterbury which is one of the many places there where dreams are made.  As I was tying the pieces I noticed one part was tied together like a knot, I kept it that way and made that the middle.  I also noticed a clean pair of pants that had fallen into the pile, they have remained behind (I’ll need them anyway), as too have a few scraps of material which are smaller and too difficult to tie.  So that’s my piece, it can be stretched out on the floor, left in a pile in the corner, or dangled from the ceiling.   If it wraps around the corner somewhere on the ground like a harmless snake, then that would be pleasing for me.  I will email an edited piece of writing to go up near it, if that’s okay. From someone who tries hard to relate, adapt and to share, and currently tries to do as many things as possible in a day, a piece of work which I think is the most honest.

With this series of work I wanted to investigate how everyday objects could be transformed simply with the addition and subtraction of light. How mundane, inanimate objects could be brought to life with a single light source, to take on a new identity. I photographed the objects in a dark room, placing a single LED light in/on/next to the item, using a long exposure.

Cornucopia

Drawing in mixed media, 84 x 29.5 cm.

Stefani

Woven white dasies, ivy and corn.  64 x 41 cm.

My current work is about myth and metamorphosis aiming to create an impression of my personal mythology in a variety of media. The Stifani is part of Cretan folklore and is made by women in Maytime; they gather the white daisies from the hedgerows and make a garland, which they hang on the door of their home. It is supposed to bring them love. I spent some time in Crete in 2006 and made one of these; this year the same white daisies have spread across my lawn.

The universe approximately : A1 print (simple bulldog clips hanging)

floral text: 110cm x 30cm (can be wall mounted or self standing on floor)

"STAIN" acrylic on plywood

I wanted to create an abstract piece that was led by the materials. For this purpose I chose a discarded piece of plywood from my neighbour's field brushed off most of the debris and then using a cloth in a polishing motion applied layers of acrylic paint enhancing the patterns or feel of the wood as I progressed.
The piece is approx 60cms by 120cms and would need to be hung on a wall. Some natural light would be an advantage.

Oil paint on boards.   28.5 x 24 cm and 11 x 21 cm.

From a 'dark and light' project.  The cup of light perched precariously on the edge of a vertical drop with the handle beckoning for a helping hand is my attempt to portray how vulnerable life can sometimes be. The small dark painting below is to emphasise gravity, in both senses of the word.

I have chosen a large wire sculpture, which would be hung on wire cords from the ceiling. It is approximately 5' in height, (at the head) and approx 5' in length. Its weight is as yet unknown, but suffice it to say, I can carry it comfortably- although it is bulky, and would need 2 persons to hang it. I would like it suspended so that the viewer can see it from underneath, as well as from all around, and will have 1-2 spotlights on it to create shadows.

I have also chosen to exhibit a wall hung piece (framed). It is approx 3' by 3'. It is a print and drawing combined, layered together to give it 3 dimensions. It is in black and white, with grey frame.

Using wire, or lettering and code over and over again is a means of creating 'matter', as if of dust particles, or galaxies of stars hurtling into an infinite chaos of energy.

                                                     122cm x 150cm

                                                         175cm x 220 cm

Many family memories are captured in photographs that eventually over time are abandoned as links with the present generation fade, I have worked with old family photographs and re interpreted them as large scale paintings transforming the everyday to the memorial.
The blanket banner is a tribute to my grandparents war time relationship illustrated with correspondence and referencing consequences and struggles in their post war married years. The use of the blanket as a back clothe to the banner is important for its domestic connotations and symbolic links to the marital bed which over the years bares witness to love, procreation, birth and death.

I didnt create a new piece of work for this as I am happy with the work I have produced on my BA Fine Art course and I feel I wouldnt want to produce something that might not be as good.

My first piece are my paper bags documenting peoples facial expressions - this comes from my project 'Lack of communication'. If these were chosen - there would be 10 paper bags. I wouldnt need a frame or anything for these. They would be stuck on the wall 5 across and 5 across underneath with either pins or sticky pads - more than likely sticky pads and i do not to want to put holes in the bags. If these was chosen, depending on the time limit. I would hopefully aim to make some more with different people.

My second piece is a photograph of my text piece 'I am the greatest artist in the world'. If this was chosen - I would proberly print this A2 size. Im not sure about framing but if I did - it would proberly be a simple black frame which wouldnt stand out too much against the text.

Proposal 1 - Oil paint on Board approx 60x40cm dimension to be wall mounted... nice and simple.

Proposal 2 - Would be a new piece of work based on the preliminary sketch.
The final work will be a quasi sculptural painting evocative of Frank Stalla - each of the geometric shapes forming the picture space will be layered on top of one another creating a staggered plane to work on.

At present the plan is to work in a palette similar to the sketch however this is subject to change.

Dimensions likely to fit within 1m square of wall space or smaller.

During the past year I have been producing work resulting in both exploring and researching elements surrounding the burka. The piece above was part of my research, and that research in turn became my art. The tags were collected while I was wearing the burka in and around Canterbury. This I would like to be exhibited so that it related to human height. The clay hanger needs to hang from a screw which has a custom made piece extending from where it it attached to the wall. There is some photo documentation of the public interactions with the collection of the labels. This does not necessarily need to be displayed.

The above work is a series of A3 silk screen images on paper. There are 35 prints in total and for this reason it might be too large for this exhibition. This piece consisting of 18 prints was part of an installation where a film was projected onto the images.

Sophie Barnett - Exhibition Proposal.

Firstly, I think that this exhibition is a great idea, especially as it is happening in Margate.

As I am first posting my work, I hope I can get good dibs on a space. I'd love to have it at the far end of the gallery, farthest from the door.

My piece is going to be 1.5m in width (landscape) and 1m in height, roughly. It's making a fairly bold statement (and some fairly bold sub-statements), so size does matter.

My piece is was photographed on film and has been digitally manipulated. It will be printed most likely on glossy paper.

I think it would look best as a big piece, and I would require 2 or 3 of the lights to light it up, on the sliding light rig that goes above the pieces. I'd probably frame the piece and have it behind some sort of protective surface.

Included is a jpeg of my image, at a low res and medium size for visibility. If anyone needs to see it bigger, I'd prefer to e-mail it as I'd rather not post large, hig res images online.

I hope that my work can be included in what will doubtless be very impactful exhibition.

Sophie.

Please post 2 pieces of work for selection for the exhibition in July.

If possible 2 pieces of different dimension/scale or medium - to allow for us to put together a really strong and cohesive show! it would be really helpful if you could detail the measurements for your work along with any essential display requirements (such as power source, clearance etc)... so we can get a good idea of how things will fit the space

Work must be posted onto the blog before 4th June 2012.

Do visit http://www.limboarts.co.uk/substation.html to see a floor plan of the space...
